- The facility will incorporate advanced construction solutions and sustainability criteria aligned with international standards.
- The project will strengthen Málaga’s position as a strategic hub for research and advanced technology industries.
Malaga (Spain) –ITERCON, a leading global design and construction company and part of Grupo CYCLUS, has been awarded, together with OHLA and Sando, the contract for the design and construction of the new Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre (IMEC) facility in Málaga, with a project budget exceeding €163 million.
The development is a strategic infrastructure project dedicated to advanced semiconductor research and development. Promoted by the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT), it represents one of the largest technology investments currently underway in Spain.
The contract covers the full development of a highly specialized industrial complex with an approximate built area of 45,000 m². The facility will integrate research laboratories, pilot production areas, and technical support services associated with the manufacturing of 300 mm wafers, positioning Málaga and the Málaga Tech Park as a key reference point within the European technology ecosystem.
As part of the consortium formed by OHLA, Sando and ITERCON, the latter contributes its extensive expertise in industrial construction and the delivery of complex technical infrastructure projects. The company is currently involved in the construction of one of the automotive industry’s leading electric vehicle batteries gigafactories and has built a strong national and international track record in the design and construction of data centers.
The Málaga project includes the construction of a state-of-the-art cleanroom facility of nearly 2,000 m², conceived as the core of the complex, together with supporting technical buildings, R&D spaces, control areas, and general services required to ensure uninterrupted operations.
The scope also includes the execution of all external infrastructure and site urbanization works, including access roads, internal roadways, pedestrian areas, parking facilities, and landscaped spaces, with the objective of delivering a fully operational campus. The development will be located within the expansion area of Málaga Tech Park, one of Spain’s leading technology and innovation hubs, with construction expected to continue through 2028.
The IMEC microchip center has been designed under strict sustainability and energy-efficiency criteria, targeting LEED Gold certification. The project will incorporate methodologies aimed at optimizing technical coordination, minimizing environmental impact, and ensuring the highest quality standards throughout the construction process.
Strengthening ITERCON’s Position in High-Tech Infrastructure Projects
The award of the IMEC facility marks another significant milestone for ITERCON within the industrial and high-technology sectors, reinforcing its role within Grupo CYCLUS as a specialist contractor for critical infrastructure and advanced industrial developments.
Participation in this project further demonstrates the company’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that drives innovation, industrial competitiveness, and technological growth. The contract award also represents another step in ITERCON’s contribution to the industrial, logistics, civil engineering, and technology development of southern Spain, where the company is currently delivering several projects across the provinces of Málaga and Seville.
